General information

Access to care in many languages

Communicating about health concerns is difficult enough without a language barrier. That's why Oakland Medical Center has caregivers who are trained to provide care in other languages, including Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and American Sign Language. And in the exam room, our telephone language line offers interpreters who speak Spanish, Hindi, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Farsi, and more.

Supporting the diverse needs of our community
Caregivers at this hospital have partnered with our Institute for Culturally Competent Care to ensure all members can easily access care. Throughout the facility, signs appear in a variety of languages. And members can access culturally relevant education classes, videos, and printed support materials in several languages. (Some classes may require a fee.)

Welcome to the website of Alameda County Medical Center. As Chief Executive Officer, it is my privilege and duty to lead an organization that has served the healthcare needs of Alameda County since 1864. I'm proud of the accomplishments of our physicians and excellent staff. From our roots as a 19th century tuberculosis sanitarium in San Leandro (the present day Fairmont Hospital) to the completion of spacious 21st century Trauma, Emergency and Surgery facilities at the Highland campus in Oakland, we have strived to meet the changing needs of all county residents, regardless of race, language, or financial means. Our evolution continues. We have implemented language interpretation--in person, by phone, and via cutting-edge two-way video technology--in more than two dozen languages, as part of our commitment to addressing the rainbow diversity of our Alameda County patient population. We continue to be a leader in HIV services, with a bold initiative to provide universal HIV screening to patients who use our Emergency Department. And we are planning for the replacement of our acute inpatient building with new facilities that will be up-to-date and seismically safe. This is a challenging and fascinating time for public hospitals and health systems, and we are meeting the challenges head on by building a truly outstanding team of medical staff, house staff and employees. If you are a health care professional, please visit the newly-enhanced Job Opportunities section and consider ACMC as the vehicle for your career growth. If you are a medical student planning for post-MD training, look into our outstanding residency programs affiliated with University of California-San Francisco and University of the Pacific.

An overview of Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC) begins with our mission – we are and have always been here to deliver the highest quality, compassionate care to all county residents, regardless of their ability to pay. No other health system within our County shares this mission and it is one we perform uniquely well. We are one of the major hospital systems in the Bay Area, with 475 licensed beds on three campuses: 236 at Highland Hospital, 159 at Fairmont Hospital and 80 at John George Psychiatric Pavilion. Our system serves Alameda County with three freestanding ambulatory care centers in addition to outpatient clinics at Highland Hospital.
